Elementary Teacher Training

Teachers lay the foundation of the progress of a country. They labour behind the scenes to hone skills of little ones that grow up to be decision makers, country leaders and nation builders.

Elementary education is provided to children in India from class I to class VII. This being the critical time of a growing child, giving right direction, plays a vital role. Every child is different, every age is different and every child can be moulded to be a better and a smarter human being. This is the very age that a child gains his personality. Grooming a child in this period will develop his personality and give him perspective on life.

Hence teachers have to be trained specifically for this age group. Elementary teacher training can be undertaken after receiving education of 10+2. However as the level of education has upped in the past decade, some institutes put a bar of graduation as the eligibility criteria.

There are over a thousand institutes that impart elementary teacher training ETE in the country. Some of them are as follows:
  • Jr College of Education of Women – Maharashtra
  • Jyotiba Phule College of education for women – Maharashtra
  • K.K.S. Mani college of Education – Tamil Nadu
  • Kalaimahal College of education – Tamil Nadu
  • Kamraj College of education – Tamil Nadu
  • Kalpana Chawla College of Education for women – Haryana
  • Khai Kanya Mahavidyalaya – Uttar Pradesh
  • Krishnapur primary teachers training institute – West Bengal

What are the pre-major educational requirements for elementary teachers?
Besides basic education of an HSC or graduation as required by the institute, some programmes need students to further study on human development and child psychology. Lab courses are also recommended to analyse and understand methods of education. There is a thorough interview to be passed in some institutes before you can start the course, which invites the students to be well learnt at the onset of the programme, thus grilling them to understand that they are taking on a crucial initiate and have to be thorough in it.

Once accepted into the institute, students are encouraged to take advanced courses in science, math and social studies. The curriculum takes a deeper understanding into algebra, biology and history.

Why is this required?
Because Elementary teachers are those that introduce reading, math, science and arts to students. Hence they have to be thorough in the subject themselves before they get on to teach young minds. Also they have to learn alternate methods of teaching incase the child is not able to understand the current method.

On the job
Students who have completed the elementary training are required to do an internship of 3 to 6 months so that they get a hands-on training before they get completely professional with the same. They are paid a stipend depending on the school, post which professional elementary teachers are welcomed into the school.
