Teacher Training Programs

In the 21st Century it’s the children that will carry forward the traditions and contribute to the development of society. All educationists today believe that 60-70% of the
knowledge that a child acquires is during the age of 5-6 years. Though the mother is a child’s first teacher, but once the child enters school it is the real teachers who take over their education.

Thus it becomes very important to train the teachers. This training can be divided into Montessori, kindergarten, nursery, secondary, higher secondary and technical training. Expert training helps the teacher to establish a direct rapport with the children’s budding personality. Teachers training include courses like D.Ed., B.Ed. and M.Ed. which can be done after a graduation in BA/B.Com/B.Sc. Tese courses can be full time classroom, distance mode or even on-line in some cases.

Talking about Chennai, it is well known for its educational and research institutions. Schools have affiliations ranging from the CBSE to International Baccalaureate. Thus to maintain high standards of education there is a constant flow of teaching jobs which leads to a demand of qualified teachers with a Teachers Training Course certification. The courses are designed to cover the theoretical as well as the practical aspects of teaching with real life experiences which equips the candidate t handle real life classroom problems. The modules are well researched to look into problems and find solutions. Keeping with the coming trends Computer Aided Learning is a requirement for all the aspiring teachers.

Delhi and the adjoining parts of the NCR have a host of colleges offering the various Teacher Training Courses. Talking about the colleges imparting B.Ed. degree, we have Siddhi Vinayak College of Science and Higher Education. Then we have Amity Institution of Education, Shiva Institute of Management Studies, HLM Group of Institutions, Kalka Institute for Research and Advance Studies, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Women’s College, Shyama Prasad Mukherji College for Women and SAI Institute for Girls. Other than this the vocational training colleges which provide a diploma and NTT courses for teacher training in Delhi are Pragati Institute of Education and Training established in 2005, Learner’s Castle in Hauz Khauz, Air force Vocational College near Race Course In South Delhi and INDOSS Polytechnic for Women which is a UGC recognized institute in Rajouri Garden. Some of the other well established institutions in the adjoining areas are KIIT College on Sohna Road, Gurgaon, Excel Institute of Education and LLDIMS in Noida.

Other than these to impart technical training at the higher level the headquarters of the INDIRA GANDHI NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY(IGNOU) is also situated in Delhi, a repute institute that imparts primary teacher training in Delhi. Several institutions all over the country are affiliated to it which provides quality long distance learning programmes for all the courses ranging from D.Ed., B.Ed. and M.Ed. Elementary Teacher Training

Teachers lay the foundation of the progress of a country. They labour behind the scenes to hone skills of little ones that grow up to be decision makers, country leaders and nation builders.

Elementary education is provided to children in India from class I to class VII. This being the critical time of a growing child, giving right direction, plays a vital role. Every child is different, every age is different and every child can be moulded to be a better and a smarter human being. This is the very age that a child gains his personality. Grooming a child in this period will develop his personality and give him perspective on life.

Hence teachers have to be trained specifically for this age group. Elementary teacher training can be undertaken after receiving education of 10+2. However as the level of education has upped in the past decade, some institutes put a bar of graduation as the eligibility criteria.

There are over a thousand institutes that impart elementary teacher training ETE in the country. Some of them are as follows:
  • Jr College of Education of Women – Maharashtra
  • Jyotiba Phule College of education for women – Maharashtra
  • K.K.S. Mani college of Education – Tamil Nadu
  • Kalaimahal College of education – Tamil Nadu
  • Kamraj College of education – Tamil Nadu
  • Kalpana Chawla College of Education for women – Haryana
  • Khai Kanya Mahavidyalaya – Uttar Pradesh
  • Krishnapur primary teachers training institute – West Bengal

What are the pre-major educational requirements for elementary teachers?
Besides basic education of an HSC or graduation as required by the institute, some programmes need students to further study on human development and child psychology. Lab courses are also recommended to analyse and understand methods of education. There is a thorough interview to be passed in some institutes before you can start the course, which invites the students to be well learnt at the onset of the programme, thus grilling them to understand that they are taking on a crucial initiate and have to be thorough in it.

Once accepted into the institute, students are encouraged to take advanced courses in science, math and social studies. The curriculum takes a deeper understanding into algebra, biology and history.

Why is this required?
Because Elementary teachers are those that introduce reading, math, science and arts to students. Hence they have to be thorough in the subject themselves before they get on to teach young minds. Also they have to learn alternate methods of teaching incase the child is not able to understand the current method.

On the job
Students who have completed the elementary training are required to do an internship of 3 to 6 months so that they get a hands-on training before they get completely professional with the same. They are paid a stipend depending on the school, post which professional elementary teachers are welcomed into the school.

Teaching has always held a place of pride in Indian social milieu and ethos. Right from the famous ancient teachers like Vashisht, Dhaumya, Dronacharya, Kripacharya and Parashurama, religious teachers and preachers like Adi Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharya, Sri Ramakrishna Paramhamsa down to modern day educationists like Dr.Radhakrishnan, Sir Ashutosh Mukherji, Prof. Meghnad Saha, Shri J.C. The keynote of our culture has always been: Acharya Deva Bhava (the teacher is God).

Teaching as professions is divided into many areas of specializations, each requiring different skill-set and method of training. Some of the major areas of specialization include teaching at nursery schools, middle schools, high schools, colleges- universities, institutes, special schools (for students with specific needs, eg- physically challenged ones etc.

Teaching Eligibility Criteria

The teaching profession is a highly specialized field, and hence requires comprehensive training to gain expertise in the field. It has some myths about it. It is commonly believed that anyone can teach, provided he has some knowledge for the subject.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Knowledge is just one thing that a teacher should have among other things. The fundamental qualities required are excellent communication skills, the ability to hold the attention of young minds, to inspire confidence and finally, the ability to set an example by word and deed.

To enter schools, you should have a B.Ed degree. Colleges across the country offer these degrees. Some universities offer B.Ed courses by correspondence too. One can do the M.Ed later, to add to qualifications.

As a matter of fact, M. Ed is only required to enhance your possibilities of promotion or getting the next higher grade. In case you want to specialize as a nursery teacher only; you must undergo a special nursery teachers ' training, available in various universities.

In case an individual plans to be a games/physical fitness instructor, he/she will require obtaining a certificate/ degree or diploma from any one of the sports institutes located around the country.

College and university teaching requires a different approach. After finishing M.A. in a subject, one can become a specialist by doing M. Phil. or Ph.D. To become a college lecturer, you will have to clear the NET exam conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC). One can then apply to colleges for a job as and when a vacancy arises.

Teaching Skills and Attributes

One requires a blend essential attributes like patience, confidence, liking for and an understanding of children/ students. Teachers must also have organizing capacity, friendly and helpful nature and skill to communicate well, to initiate a liking in their students minds even in the case of most boring subjects.

A Teacher has to be a friend, philosopher and guide to his wards. The candidate should be initiative driven, passionate about the cause and role of teaching in the society.
